While the Han-Nom script of San Diu ethnic group is at risk of being lost, Mr. Truong Van Chinh, who is over 74 years old this year, in Lat Da hamlet, Binh Son commune, Song Cong city, has opened a class to teach San Diu Han-Nom for free in the commune and attracted a large number of people to participate.

The unison readings in San Diu language from Mr. Chinh's class still take place regularly every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning during the summer. Outside of the summer months, the class is held every Sunday morning. Mr. Truong Van Chinh, Lat Da hamlet, Binh Son commune, Song Cong city said: The children do not speak much and do not understand, speak little but have many sentences they do not know, so I researched and found the book, now I teach for free for the children to review, thus preserving the origin and identity of the San Diu ethnic group.

During the days of the class, Mr. Chinh and his wife temporarily put aside all work to stay home to clean and arrange for the class. The students are the San Diu ethnic people in Lat Da hamlet and neighboring hamlets of Binh Son commune, Song Cong city. The oldest are over 60 years old, the youngest are about 8 years old, they all share a passion and desire to learn more about the traditions and preserve their writing.

Mr. Muu Van Duc, Lat Da hamlet, Binh Son commune, Song Cong city said: The whole village is very happy and agrees to create conditions for the younger generation to know the ethnic language so that it will not be lost in the future.

Lat Da hamlet, Binh Son commune, Song Cong city has over 90% of San Diu ethnic people, but currently many people can no longer read or write San Diu. With their enthusiasm and dedication, Mr. Chinh and his wife always try their best to teach the characters and customs of the San Diu ethnic group.

Nguyen Tien Anh, Lat Da hamlet, Binh Son commune, Song Cong city said: I want to preserve the culture of the ethnic group and I hope to spread it to everyone.

Mrs. Dao Thi San, (Mr. Truong Van Chinh's wife) said: Up to now, the children come to learn very regularly, every day there are about 15 children in the class, and the total is more than 20 children. Sometimes there are 1 to 3 children, we still teach. I always by my husband’s side to support him in teaching, so far I feel this class is successful.

People like Mr. Chinh have contributed to keeping the cultural source flowing forever in the San Diu community, maintaining the cultural and artistic activities of the locality and helping the younger generation understand the great cultural values of the San Diu people in particular and the Vietnamese ethnic community in general.
