Promoting agricultural production in upland areas

In 2021, Ms. Nguyễn Thị Tuyết's family (Na Phài hamlet, Phú Thượng commune), along with 43 other households, participated in the model of growing red-fleshed dragon fruit according to VietGAP standards. Supported with seedlings, fertilizers, concrete pillars, and scientific and technical guidance, Ms. Tuyết confidently converted 2 sao (approximately 700m²) of her mixed garden to dragon fruit cultivation.

After more than a year of planting, the dragon fruit trees yielded a harvest, and after deducting expenses, her family earned 10 million VND per sao. Seeing the effectiveness, Ms. Tuyết gradually expanded the area, which has now increased to 0.7ha. Currently, dragon fruit trees bring her family an income of over 100 million VND per year.

Ms. Tuyết said: Dragon fruit is suitable for both low hills and paddy fields, is easy to care for, and has few pests and diseases. The output for dragon fruit is also favorable, as during the harvest season (around April to November of the Lunar calendar), traders come to buy directly from the garden.

Mr. Lâm Văn Long's family (Làng Lai hamlet, La Hiên commune) chose to develop their economy with a chicken farming model. In 2024, with support from the District Agricultural Service Center regarding breeds, feed, and scientific and technical knowledge, he boldly invested in raising 1,000 hybrid fighting chickens. After 3 months of raising, he earned a profit of nearly 60 million VND.

Mr. Long shared: Through the raising process, I found that the hybrid fighting chicken breed adapts easily to the cold weather conditions in the highlands; the survival rate reaches 95%; they are easy to raise and can utilize available food sources…

From 2020 to now, Võ Nhai district has actively directed specialized departments to support the development of agricultural production projects and models from national target programs and the district budget. After 5 years, the district has successfully implemented 25 models and projects on crop and livestock production, such as: Breeding deer for reproduction in a chain; raising crispy carp in a bio-safe direction; organic tea production; planting medicinal plants under the forest canopy; producing greenhouse vegetables, roots, and fruits in a safe direction; bio-safe poultry farming… When participating in the models, households are supported with seedlings and young animals; agricultural materials; training; technical guidance…

Mr. Dương Văn Toản, Vice Chairman of Võ Nhai District People's Committee, informed: To ensure the effectiveness of agricultural models and projects, the district has directed specialized departments to base their implementation on the soil conditions, topography, strengths, and farming practices of the people in each commune and follow the district's agricultural development orientation. The models must produce in an organic, VietGAP, and bio-safe direction and promote linkages in agricultural product consumption chains.

Promoting the development of these models not only contributes to changing people's thinking, methods, and habits in production but also helps maintain stable growth for Võ Nhai's agricultural sector. In 2024, the production value of the district's agriculture, forestry, and fishery sector reached over 1,000 billion VND (an increase of nearly 6% compared to 2023); the value of products per hectare of cultivated land reached 109 million VND (an increase of nearly 40 million VND compared to 2020); the output of all kinds of livestock meat reached 11,000 tons (an increase of 5,000 tons compared to 2020)…

Along with that, the district has a total of 21 products granted 3-star OCOP certification, many of which are built from crop models.

Ms. Đặng Thị Hiếu, Director of the District Agricultural Service Center, said: We are coordinating with communes and specialized departments of the district to continue implementing and replicating effective models; promoting technology transfer so that farmers have more knowledge to apply to production, thereby improving the productivity and value of crops and livestock.
