On Luong preserves cultural identity to develop tourism

In order to promote the potential strengths, both preserving and conserving cultural identity and improving the lives of local people, in November 2023, the Provincial People's Committee approved the Investment Project for the Conservation of the Traditional Village of the Tay Ethnic Group in Ban Dong Hamlet, On Luong Commune, assigning the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism as the investor. The project has a total investment of about 9 billion VND, capital from the central budget in the period of 2023-2025. In phase 1 of the project, 5 stilt houses of Ban Dong will be renovated, and a community house with the identity of the Tay people in the hamlet will be built. In addition, intangible heritages of the Tay people such as Then singing and Vi singing will also be restored and preserved.

By the end of October 2024, after about 8 months of construction, the community house with the identity of the Tay people is basically being completed and put into use. Along with that, 5 stilt houses of the Tay people in Ban Dong hamlet have also been repaired. Receiving us in the spacious stilt house, Ms. Ma Thi Bau - one of 5 Tay ethnic households in Ban Dong hamlet receiving State funding to repair and restore traditional stilt houses under the Project, said: My family is very excited to receive investment support to preserve the stilt house. We will preserve this house and aim to develop community tourism to increase income.

Mr. Phan Thanh Ngoc, Chairman of the People's Committee of On Luong Commune, said: The investment project to preserve the traditional Tay ethnic village in Ban Dong hamlet is very meaningful, contributing to preserving the traditions and local cultural identity. More importantly, it helps the Tay people here have the opportunity to develop their economy from community tourism. Not only in Ban Dong, the restoration and promotion of traditional cultural values of the Tay people will be replicated by us to promote community tourism and economic development.

Recognizing that preserving the national cultural identity associated with economic development is an important premise for effectively exploiting the potential and advantages of the locality, On Luong Commune has included this content in the Resolution of the term, orienting the development of community tourism in the period of 2020-2025 and the following years.

The commune also aims to build a community tourism tour in the locality: Visiting the vai sticky rice field, experiencing making green rice flakes, wrapping cakes, making five-color sticky rice or bamboo rice at the On Luong vai sticky rice agricultural cooperative, visiting Na Mat lake, the memorial stele house where the first government of the district was established, stopping by Tam Hop honey cooperative, Phu Luong agricultural cooperative, enjoying tea and agricultural products, listening to Then singing of the Tay people in traditional stilt houses. In the process of preserving and promoting cultural values, in addition to investment from the State, many households in On Luong have proactively developed local strengths associated with preserving national culture, opening the way for community tourism development.
