Tan Long exploits agricultural and forestry potential
Mr. Dam Van Xuan, Vice Chairman of Tan Long Commune People's Committee, said: The commune has over 1,580 households, with more than 7,060 people, of which over 80% are ethnic minorities, 90% of households are farmers. To help people develop production and increase income, the commune has promoted propaganda to raise awareness, mobilized people in 9/9 hamlets to focus on exploiting land advantages, introducing high-yield and high-value crop and livestock varieties into farming; Strictly implement disease prevention and control work. Thanks to the effective implementation of the above solutions, in recent years, the socio-economic development targets of the commune have been achieved and exceeded the set plan.
In 2024, the livestock sector in the commune experienced stable growth, with the total number of livestock and poultry exceeding 43,200 heads per year. The total cultivated area for agricultural and forestry production surpassed the planned target by 4%.
The entire commune has 178 out of 183 hectares of tea plantations in commercial production, an increase of 10 hectares compared to 2020. On average, the annual yield of fresh tea buds reaches 2,100 tons. Of the commune’s 1,200 hectares of production forest, over 304 hectares have been granted FSC certification.
Notably, the commune is home to five cooperative groups and agricultural cooperatives that operate stably in the agricultural and forestry sectors, facilitating economic development for local residents.
For example, the Tân Long Agricultural Trade and Services Cooperative, established in 2022, has been operating effectively since its founding, with 11 members. Mr. Hoang Dang Vinh, Director of the Cooperative, shared: “Recognizing the advantages of the local area, I took the initiative to form a cooperative that brings together farmers with a shared interest in raising goats and chickens.”
In recent years, the cooperative has served as a key link with companies to provide high-quality breeding stock and feed for its members, while also creating a platform for them to exchange experiences in animal husbandry and disease prevention. Currently, the total goat population in the commune has reached 1,000, with 15 farms in operation, 10 of which are managed by the cooperative.
Ms. Lang Thi Diem, a member of the VietGAP tea production cooperative group in Ba Dinh hamlet, shared: “As a member of the group, I have participated in many training sessions, gained new knowledge, and come to appreciate the value of new tea varieties and VietGAP-certified tea. Currently, my family mainly cultivates the Long Van tea variety, which sells for twice the price of common fresh tea varieties. I’ve also invested in machinery and opened a small processing workshop to enhance the value of the tea and improve economic efficiency.”
To help residents access funding for economic development, the Tan Long Commune People's Committee has coordinated with the Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development and the district branch of the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies (VBSP) to effectively implement credit support programs.
As of now, VBSP alone has a total outstanding loan balance of 69.9 billion VND in the commune, with 866 households receiving loans. According to assessments, the borrowers have been using the funds properly to support production and job creation.
Ms. Luc Thi Thu, a resident of Dong Luong hamlet, said: “In 2021, thanks to a 100 million VND loan from VBSP, my family was able to invest in livestock farming and plant 1 hectare of acacia trees. With effective production, our living conditions have improved.”
The lives of Tan Long residents have gradually improved. In 2024, the commune recorded 16 households escaping poverty. Currently, the poverty rate stands at 10.2%, with near-poor households at 4.4%. The average annual income per person has reached 43 million VND, an increase of 8 million VND compared to 2021.
According to Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dam Van Xuan Commune: In the coming time, the locality will continue to mobilize people to maintain and exploit the advantages in agricultural and forestry production to contribute to hunger eradication, poverty reduction, and economic development.
