Smart canteen – A digital solution for school health

News
Alongside efforts to improve educational quality, school health is a concern shared by many experts, educational administrators, parents, and society at large. As one of the pioneering schools in building a digital learning environment, Nha Trang Secondary School (Thai Nguyen City) has collaborated with relevant partners to implement the Smart Canteen solution, aiming to address issues related to food safety and the overall physical well-being of students.

The Smart Canteen system has been operated by Ubofood Vietnam Joint Stock Company since 2023, comprising several components: Smart Canteen cards for students, a point-of-sale software system at the canteen, a mobile app for parents, and a standardized operating procedure. This application integrates modern technology into payment and management processes—students no longer need to use cash but can instead make purchases with a prepaid card linked to the app.

This solution not only ensures food safety for students at school through the provision of safe, nutritious, convenient, and diverse meals with traceable food origins, but also allows parents to monitor their children’s spending and eating habits daily via the app. For schools, the adoption of Smart Canteen contributes to maintaining a green, clean, and beautiful environment, while eliminating issues related to street vendors and the sale of unverified or unhygienic food near school premises.

Smart canteen – A digital solution for school health

After a period of implementing the Smart Canteen system, Nha Trang Secondary School has achieved impressive results, with over 75% of students using the smart card and approximately 1,800 orders processed per day. The initiative has been well received by both parents and students.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Dao, a parent from Phan Dinh Phung ward, shared: "When I learned that the school was implementing the Smart Canteen, I immediately registered for my child. Given the concerns about food safety, especially with street vendors outside the school gates. This digital solution offers a safe food source for students while allowing parents like us to monitor our children’s spending and food choices. It gives us great peace of mind."

The implementation process has involved close cooperation between the Department of Education and Training, the school, and the tech company, with numerous sessions organized for discussion, training, and coordination.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Executive Director of the Smart Canteen system in Thai Nguyen, stated: "Throughout the implementation, we’ve received strong support from the City’s Department of Education and Training, the Provincial Department of Education and Training, the school, and the parents. We believe that Smart Canteen not only offers an effective solution for ensuring food safety and promoting physical health among students, but also acts as a transparent platform that strengthens connections between the school, parents, and students."

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Deputy Director of Thai Nguyen’s Department of Education and Training, also emphasized: "Education is not only about delivering academic knowledge, but also about equipping students with essential life skills and ensuring their holistic physical development. That’s why we highly appreciate the effectiveness of the Smart Canteen solution. Moving forward, we plan to scale the model in a practical and sustainable manner."

In addition to Smart Canteen, Nha Trang Secondary School is actively implementing various digital transformation initiatives. For the 2024–2025 school year, the school organized a STEM teaching product exhibition competition under the theme ‘Unlimited Creativity’. The competition received 70 innovative entries, including models and projects such as smart houses, drones and nail-sweeping vehicles, floating houses, power generation using solar, wind, and water energy, biological cell models, genetics models, and the Matcha Fine project.
